Grounding in the Midst of Chaos

Updated: Feb 18, 2020

Navigating life in a society that is moving non-stop can be exhausting, draining, overwhelming and hard to balance. Deadlines at work are approaching, the kids have to prepare for their school recital, you have to get your parent to their doctor’s appointment, it’s time for the bills to be balanced, your partner forgot to schedule the dog’s vet appointment, etc. The moment the to-do list from last week gets cleared, there are already five new agenda items back on the list that need to be completed, right now. It can seem like there is no time to think, rest, or even breathe. It can feel like you are living in a constant state of chaos – a state of utter confusion. How does one ground themselves when immersed in a state of constant confusion? Where is there time for self?

Chaos changes in intensity and frequency but, is prevalent throughout the human experience. Reaching a point where chaos can move around us rather than through us is the key to remaining grounded.  Renowned poet Maya Angelou said, “No matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow,” recognizing that many things are temporary can help push forward.

There are other strategies that may improve our ability to remain grounded throughout it all. According to Psychology Today’s article, “7 Strategies to Face Life’s Challenges,” there are steps that can be taken to help manage the world around us while tending to ourselves:

  1. Turn towards reality – Avoid avoidance, face reality head on.

  2. Embrace life as it is rather than as you wish it to be – Focus thoughts on what you have in the present moment.

  3. Take your time – Slow down, pace yourself, it doesn’t all have to get done today.

  4. Practice gratitude – Recognize the good and be thankful for it.

  5. Stay close to your feelings, even the painful ones – Use feelings to motivate yourself, embrace them.

  6. Accept success and failure as part of life’s journey – Extend yourself grace, allow space for growth. Know that asking for help is okay.

  7. Tend to your loving relationships – Give love and receive love.

Whichever strategy we choose, as life happens, take a moment to notice the flowers budding, the birds chirping, the sunset, or whatever you deem to be beautiful.
